Agnessa was born in Bulgaria in 1968. She has a PhD in Art History from the Fine Art Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria. She has been involved in numerous painting and sculpture projects, exhibitions, and symposia in more than a dozen countries. Agnessa has previously participated in 16 international stone sculpture symposia.
2012 Symposium
It has always been a great excitement for me to see the three dimensional shapes appear and take their places in space. In each moment of the process, they tell stories about pain, emotions, and victories.
In my mind the rationalism and the synthesis of the abstract construction of the work gives the idea of the aesthetic taste and of the artist’s knowledge of art styles, history and movements. It presents the whole cultural background of the work and the artist. This “rational”, cognitive element I try to combine with one more –the sense of the vivid, organic and ephemeral life. In order to catch this vivid emotions and pulsatile energy of life, I use soft forms, expressing movement. These forms could be inspired by the sea waves, the mountain shapes or by pieces of cloth. I am very impressed also by the expressiveness of the Renaissance draperies, underlying the emotional state of the figures… I try to express passion and the ephemeral sense for the life passing near.
About the granite – I am always excited about the raw power of this stone. Also the work with granite often sends me back in the time, when this hard, solid and durable material was moving fiery lava, having an enormous energy. All the energy of the hot lava is kept in this raw material, exiting with its frozen Beauty and Power.
I feel that the interaction between the energy of the natural material and the elusive energy of our emotions creates the power and the sense of art. A stone work gives an opportunity to share and spread our rational and emotional knowledge in space and time, to connect people and nations.
I would like to have opportunity to make big size granite work for the Saint John Sculpture Symposium.
