Wyatt was born in Saint John, New Brunswick. After a few days, he was whisked away to St. Andrews, NB, where he grew up with his family. After high school he studied in the two-year Boatbuilding diploma program at the New Brunswick Community College St Andrews Campus. He’s been involved in the boatbuilding trade ever since, specializing in modern wood construction methods. Wyatt has been teaching boatbuilding and hand-tool classes while building and restoring boats throughout the year. When not building in the shop, he is a part-time lobster fisherman in the Charlotte County area. He now lives in Mascarene, NB, across the bay from his hometown.

“While not having trained as an artist for my boat work, per se, I’ve always felt that there exists a connection between functional, nautical forms, and those that come from creating sculptural art forms. Vessels, like sculpture, take on a life of their own, by skilled use of the hand and eye in combination. I’m fascinated to see the sculptural process come to light as each artist slowly brings about each piece from within a massive chunk of rock. The sense of longevity that I attach to stone as a material to work with is also a draw for me to this symposium. There is hardly anything on this planet that can outlast it through centuries, a material so raw and basic, yet so long reaching. I’m excited for this opportunity to learn, and see this transformation take place with the other interns. Someday, I hope to be able to bring to life some of my own concepts that I wish to explore.
