Jim Boyd is from Saint John, New Brunswick. He has a BFA with a Major in Sculpture from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada, and a BEd from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, Canada.

Jim has participated in all five Sculpture Saint John Symposiums since 2012. His sculptures on the International Sculpture Trail are located in Eastport, Maine, St. George, Hampton, Saint John, and Grand Bay-Westfield. He also created pieces at the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium in 2011 in Maine, USA, and in Istanbul, Turkey in 2013.

“Participating in sculpture symposiums appeals to me for many reasons, the first being that it enables me to create stone sculptures on a larger scale than ones that I make at home in my studio in Hampton. Symposiums also bring together a small group of artists to create sculpture in public.”

“Fundy Spirit”

Deer Island

2022 Symposium

“When I think of Deer Island, what first comes to mind is a beautiful island situated in the Bay of Fundy. Fishing has been and continues to be an important part of Deer Island’s economy. With these thoughts in mind, I created a sculpture hoping to acknowledge the spirit of the island.

My sculpture Fundy Spirit consists of a gently curved sail emerging from a rock. The sail has 3 slightly raised fluid forms that spiral into a hole within the sail. For me, these forms represent the famous tidal whirlpool off the coast of Deer Island known as Old Sow. The hole through the sail also serves as a sort of port hole looking out onto the Bay of Fundy. The inside of the sail has a smoother polish than other areas of the sculpture, possibly evoking the feel of the inside of a shell.”
